Ignatian Spirituality

Ignatian Spirituality by Revd. Richard Lambert

I admit to being a bit of a groupie of Ignatius of Loyola. I first came across him through the app Pray-as -you-go which I’ve been using as part of my Quiet Time for more than 12 years. What I love is the engagement with the stories about Jesus.

Ignatius of Loyola was born in 1491, the same year as Henry VIII, although their lives took them in radically different directions. After a remarkable conversion experience, Ignatius with others, including Francis Xavier, founded the Society of Jesus, an order of monks who quickly became known as the Jesuits, which was primarily a teaching order.

Fundamental to their teaching was the understanding that God can be found in all things, and that God loves us and is delighted with us, his creation.

One of the features of Ignatian Spirituality is called Imaginative Contemplation. Ignatius taught his followers to imagine the stories about Jesus in the most vivid way possible, using all the senses, in order to experience the person of Jesus and learn more about him and the implication of that knowledge for our own lives.

With my friend Betsy Jones, we have now run two courses at St Thomas’s, entitled Exploring Ignatian Spirituality. We plan to repeat the course in the near future.

Education for Ministry

Education for Ministry is celebrating its 50th anniversary. We seek to affirm, we seek to challenge and we seek to inspire people to recognise how God is calling them to respond to their learning. We are all called to “seek and serve God in all people” and so in the programme we practice theological conversation.

Education for Ministry takes us where we are in our faith journey, young and old and helps us recognise that throughout our journey God calls us into ministries in the Kingdom. Our structured programme offers the opportunity to learn about the Bible, about our history and how to use the wealth of Christian teaching to navigate modern issues. We have the classic four year programme (although no one commits to more than one year at a time) and we have the new ‘Wide Angle' programme which offers a taste of everything in a one year course. We offer a group meeting here at St Thomas’s ona Monday afternoon and several on-line groups.

We seek to affirm long held faith positions, we seek to challenge new ways of thinking about our faith and we sow the seeds of ways to live into our ministries in the Kingdom.
